You also don’t have to worry about leaks as all breastmilk pouches have a double zip closure and double walls, and their seams are heat sealed to prevent them from tearing, unsticking or cracking. Expressed breast milk stored at room temperature is safe for consumption for four hours.1 If longer transport (up to eight hours) is required, the bags will need to be placed in a cooler bag with ice packs.
Hygienic use of breast milk pouches
Proper hygiene is essential to keep your expressed milk safe for your baby. Before touching the bag, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and drinking water, then dry them with a clean towel or disposable towel. Try not to touch the inside of the bag. Medela breast milk bags are for single use only – this is important for hygiene reasons. Do not reuse the same bag as this can lead to cross contamination. Fortunately, they are sold in packs of 25 or 50, so you always have a solid supply on hand.
Freezing expressed milk
Breast milk storage bags are also perfect for freezing it. They are frost resistant, ready to use and easy to label. Simply write the relevant information on the front of the bag to easily track your pumping dates. Remember: like any other liquid, milk expands when frozen. So do not fill the bags beyond the clearly marked 180 ml mark.
