Indication:
The medicine is used.
in cases of constipation that cannot be sufficiently controlled by a high-fiber diet and other general measures.
in diseases requiring relief of stool
for the prevention and treatment of portocaval encephalopathy (i.e., disorders of brain function resulting from chronic liver disease, especially cirrhosis).
Dosage:
The laxative effect of the medicine may appear after 2-10 hours, but it may take 1-2 days before the first bowel movement, especially if the dosage is still insufficient.
The medicine must be dosed differently depending on the area of application. The dosages given here should only be used as a guide and may need to be adjusted to achieve the desired effect.
The recommended dose is
For constipation
Adult
1-2 times daily, 5-10 g (equivalent to 7.5-15 ml)
Children
1-2 times daily, 3-6 g (equivalent to 4.5-9 ml)
Higher doses of the medicine are often necessary, especially at the beginning of the treatment of constipation. As a rule, this slightly higher initial dose can be reduced after 3-4 days.
For portocaval encephalopathy, i.e. impaired brain function due to liver disease.
Adult
At the beginning of the treatment of portocaval encephalopathy, adults should take 5-10 g (equivalent to 7.5-15 ml) 3-4 times a day.
Then the dose should be slowly and carefully increased to 20-30 g (equivalent to 30-45 ml) 3-4 times a day. The goal should be to have soft stools two to three times a day.
Children
There is no information on use in children.
Duration of use:
The duration of treatment depends on the development of the relevant clinical picture.
Contraindications:
The medicine CANNOT be taken
if you are allergic to lactulose or any other ingredient of the product
if you have symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting and fever. These may be signs of a serious illness such as intestinal obstruction (ileus) or inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. If you experience such symptoms, you should seek immediate medical attention.
if you suffer from a rare hereditary form of fructose intolerance (familial fructose intolerance).”
