Action
Like other vitamins, vitamin D is essential. There are several types of vitamin D, but the two most important forms are D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol).
Vitamin D3 is synthesized in the skin with cholesterol in response to an appropriate amount of sunlight (UV radiation). Vitamin D synthesized from sunlight is the most effective source of vitamin D, but it is only produced when the sun is high in the sky. In much of Europe, this only happens during the summer, so it is only during this time that we can produce sufficient levels of vitamin D.
Vitamin D2 is only available from the diet. It is produced by some fungi and plants only when exposed to UV light. Both vitamin D2 and D3 require subsequent activation in the liver and kidneys to become biologically active. Scientists believe that both forms of vitamin D are equally effective in the body. However, depending on the measurement method used, vitamin D3 is 56-87% more effective than vitamin D2 at increasing blood levels of vitamin D. Additionally, D3 is stored in fat tissue three times more efficiently than D2.
Dosage
1 capsule daily with a meal, unless otherwise directed. For adults only.
