“Composition
The active substance of the drug is: nifuroxazide (Nifuroxazidum).
One tablet contains 200 mg of nifuroxazide.
Excipients: potato starch, povidone K-25, magnesium stearate. Coating: lactose monohydrate, hypromellose 6cP, titanium dioxide (E 171), macrogol 6000, yellow iron oxide (E 172).
Dosage
Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.
Adults: 800 mg daily in 2-4 divided doses.
Children over 7 years of age: 600-800 mg daily in 2-4 divided doses.
The drug is administered orally. The tablets should be swallowed whole with an appropriate amount of liquid (a glass of water). The tablet should not be chewed or crushed.
Action
The medicinal product Nifuroksazid has local activity in the intestinal lumen against certain species of bacteria.
Polfarmex nifuroksazide does not destroy non-pathogenic bacteria normally present in the digestive tract.
It does not cause the development of bacterial strains resistant to its action.
After oral administration, it is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It is excreted unchanged in the feces.
Indications
Nifuroksazyd Polfarmex is used in acute and chronic diarrhea of bacterial origin in adults and children over 7 years of age.
Contraindications
When not to use:
If you are allergic to nifuroxazide, 5-nitrofuran derivatives or any of the other ingredients of this medicine. An allergic reaction may manifest itself as a rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or shortness of breath, confusion, pale skin, rapid breathing, weakness and fainting (if these symptoms occur, contact your doctor immediately).
Do not use in children under 7 years of age as children of this age may have difficulty swallowing the tablet.
Side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Rare (less than 1 in 1,000 people): rash, pustules on the skin.
Unknown (frequency cannot be estimated based on available data): granulocytopenia (decrease in the number of a certain type of white blood cells – granulocytes), prurigo nodularis in the course of contact allergy to nifuroxazide, abdominal pain, nausea, worsening diarrhea.
Contact your doctor immediately if you experience allergic reactions:
Allergic reactions e.g. skin reactions; rash, hives, angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, tongue, shortness of breath).
Anaphylactic shock (symptoms of confusion, pale skin, rapid breathing, weakness and fainting).
Warnings and precautions
If diarrhea persists after 2 or 3 days of treatment, or if diarrhea worsens while taking this medicine, contact your doctor immediately.
If an allergic reaction occurs with symptoms such as rash, itching, swelling, confusion, pale skin, rapid breathing, weakness and fainting, stop using Nifuroksazid Polfarmex.
You should hydrate with plenty of fluids, sweet or salty, to replenish fluid loss caused by diarrhea (the average water requirement for an adult is 2 liters).
You should continue to eat meals throughout the duration of diarrhea: excluding certain foods – in particular raw vegetables, fruits, green vegetables, spicy foods, as well as frozen foods and cold drinks. It is preferred to eat grilled meat and rice. You should not drink alcohol during treatment with nifuroxazide.
In case of severe and prolonged diarrhea, severe vomiting or reluctance to eat, see a doctor as intravenous hydration may be necessary.
Nifuroksazyd Polfarmex contains 3.84 mg of lactose monohydrate in 1 coated tablet.
Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Store at temperatures below 25°C.
Taking other medicines
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.
Nifuroxazyd Polfarmex reduces the absorption of many drugs from the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, during treatment with Nifuroksazyd Polfarmex, you should not take other oral medications at the same time.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
For pregnant or breastfeeding women, consult your doctor before using the medicine.
Use of the drug in children and adolescents
The medicinal product Nifuroksazid can be used in children over 7 years of age.
Driving vehicles and machines
Polfarmex nifuroksazide has no effect on the ability to drive or operate machinery.
