Thiokodine is a medicine in syrup form used to treat an unpleasant cough that is not accompanied by coughing up secretions.
Strawberry flavor.
Compound
The active ingredients of the drug are codeine phosphate hemihydrate (Codeini phosphas hemihidricus) and sulfovaiacol (Sulfogaiacolum).
10 ml of syrup contains 15 mg of codeine phosphate hemihydrate and 300 mg of sulfoguaiacol.
Excipients: sucrose, glycerin, sodium benzoate, strawberry flavor 502301T, citric acid monohydrate, propyl parahydroxybenzoate, purified water.
Dosage
Always use this medication exactly as described in this leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. If in doubt, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Adults and children aged 12 to 18 years: orally, during meals, 1 measuring cup (10 ml of syrup) three times a day, no more often than every 4-6 hours.
It is not recommended to use doses higher than recommended. To achieve the desired effectiveness of the product, you should drink an appropriate amount of liquid throughout the day (at least 2 liters).
Thiokine is not recommended for use in children aged 12 to 18 years with breathing problems.
Action
Thiokine has an antitussive effect, inhibits the cough reflex, reducing the frequency of coughing attacks (codeine) and an expectorant, facilitating the movement of liquefied secretions in the respiratory tract and its expectoration (sulfaguaiacol).
Indications
Thiokodine is indicated for the treatment of dry, persistent cough without expectoration of secretions.
Contraindications
When should you not use Thiocodin:
if you are allergic to codeine phosphate hemihydrate, sulfoguaiacol or any of the other ingredients of this medicine,
if the patient has bronchial asthma or respiratory failure,
if the patient is in a coma,
if you have cystic fibrosis,
if you have bronchiectasis,
if you are addicted to alcohol,
if you are addicted to opioids,
if you are known to metabolize codeine to morphine very quickly,
if the patient has a cough with discharge,
if you are currently taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or have used such medications in the past 14 days.
Side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine may cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.
Very common side effects (affecting more than 1 in 10 people):
nausea and vomiting, constipation, dizziness, sedation.
Uncommon side effects (affecting less than 1 in 100 people):
allergic reactions (itching, urticaria, rash, skin eczema),
sudden mood changes (excessive joy or sadness),
breathing disorders, bronchospasms,
rapid heartbeat, drop in blood pressure and fainting,
drowsiness, headaches,
miosis, urinary retention,
decreased appetite, visual and hearing impairment,
excessive sweating,
hallucinations (perception of non-existent objects),
acute abdominal pain (this mainly affects patients after removal of the gallbladder), irritation of the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract, symptoms of which may include, among other things: pain in the stomach (after taking large doses of the drug).
Warnings and Precautions
This medicine contains sucrose (a type of sugar). If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to certain sugars, consult your doctor before taking this medicine.
10 ml of syrup contains 6 g of sucrose. This should be taken into account in patients with diabetes.
The medicine contains sodium benzoate, which causes minor irritation of the mucous membranes.
The medicine contains propyl parahydroxybenzoate and may cause allergic reactions (possibly delayed).
The medicine should be taken orally with meals. You should drink at least 2 liters of fluid per day. This will make it easier to cough up secretions.
If your cough does not subside after 3 days of taking the medicine, or you have a high fever, skin rash, or headache, consult your doctor.
Abuse of thiocodin (i.e., use for longer than recommended and/or at higher doses than recommended) may lead to dependence.
If you overuse this medication and suddenly stop using it, you may experience withdrawal symptoms.
In people involved in sports, Thiokodine can cause positive results in anti-doping tests.
Taking other medications
Tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking, have recently taken, or may take.
Thiokodine may interact with medications:
anti-anxiety,
antidepressants also within 14 days after discontinuation of these drugs,
antihistamines,
hypnotic,
cytostatics,
opioid painkillers,
relaxation of skeletal muscles,
clonidine,
medications used for Parkinson’s disease,
metoclopramide,
quinidine,
antibiotic – rifampicin,
containing alcohol.
Taking the medicine with food and drink
You should not drink alcohol while taking this medicine.
