Vitamin D3 is produced in the dermis (deep layer of the skin) through stimulation by UVB rays. It is also present in smaller quantities in our diet via foods of animal origin such as oily fish.
It is known to play a regulatory role in bone maintenance (calcium and phosphorus content that form the skeleton), and on the immune and endocrine systems. Severe deficiency during childhood can lead to serious damage (rickets). As a result, vitamin D supplementation is often administered under pediatric supervision to infants, who should not be exposed to the sun during their first year of life.
In adolescents and adults, controlled sun exposure (15 minutes per day) can cover the production needs of vitamin D. In case of dark phototype or in the presence of certain diseases, these needs may not be sufficiently covered. Before any supplementation, it is advisable to consult a health professional.
