HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM TICK BITES

THE TICK SEASON IS OPEN – PRINCIPLES OF PROTECTION

METHODS OF PROTECTION AGAINST TICKS

The tick season usually starts in March, but it all depends on the region.

It is believed that bloodsuckers come out of hibernation at the first positive temperatures, and begin to bite at stable + 3…+5 in the afternoon. The danger persists until early autumn.

Ticks carry deadly diseases – encephalitis and borreliosis (Lyme disease).

Tick–borne viral encephalitis (CVE) is an acute infectious viral disease in which the central nervous system is affected. After it, you can either recover completely, or remain disabled or even die.

Tick–borne borreliosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria of the genus Borrelia. The manifestations of the disease are diverse:

  • not only the nervous system is affected, but also the cardiovascular system;
  • liver;
  • the membranes of the brain (meningitis);
  • joints;
  • skin.

The main measures to protect against ticks in all situations are proper clothing and regular inspection. The main task is to prevent the tick from sticking to the skin. If it does stick, it is important to detect it as early as possible. This will help prevent infection with Lyme disease: it is believed that if the tick has been stuck less than 24 hours ago, bacterial transmission is unlikely.

However, in the case of tick–borne encephalitis virus, this rule does not work – the virus enters the bloodstream instantly. Therefore, residents of areas unfavorable for tick-borne encephalitis, and especially those whose work involves visiting forests, are recommended to be vaccinated against this infection. There is no vaccine for Lyme disease, it remains only to follow the recommendations for prevention:

Protective clothing against ticks is the one that covers the skin as much as possible. You should not go into the forest in open clothes and shoes. Put on light trousers, tuck them into socks (although it sounds terrible), choose sneakers instead of sandals and flip-flops for such a walk. It is recommended to wear light-colored clothes, because insects will be more noticeable on it.

Regular skin and clothing checkups every two hours should become a habit. The examination should include the areas where ticks bite most often (because the skin is thinner there), including the armpits, groin, back of the knees, waistline and scalp. Taking a shower or bath will help to detect and wash away parasites that have not yet attached to the skin.

Clothing insulation is another method that should not be neglected. The clothes you returned from the street in can be placed in an electronic dryer, if you suddenly have one, or in a washing machine for drying mode – 4 minutes is enough to kill ticks. Alternatively, you can hang clothes on the balcony, but just do not put them immediately in a basket with dirty laundry, do not place them in the apartment – this can lead to ticks from clothes getting into the house and can crawl again and this time suck.

Insect repellents containing the active ingredients DEET, IR3535 or picaridin can help prevent tick bites, but they must be constantly reapplied. Some people use folk recipes – lemon eucalyptus and citronella oil – but they do not have proven effectiveness.
